Location Profile
Kurnai College is a multi-campus college located in Morwell and Churchill in the Latrobe Valley, approximately 150 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. Guided by its purpose, “To build a Learning Community with a global perspective which promotes respect and achievement,” the College fosters a culture where learning is the focus and all members of the community share responsibility for their own learning and the learning of others. Its four pillars - Engagement, Excellence, Work Ethic and Relationships - underpin all aspects of college life. The current Strategic Plan emphasises building teacher capacity through Professional Learning Teams, improved data literacy and assessment for learning practices, while promoting positive learning environments through the Positive Behaviour Support framework, restorative practices, an understanding of generational poverty, and the Berry Street Education Model.
Kurnai College values student, family and teacher voice and adopts a collaborative approach to curriculum and pedagogy, supported by growth coaches and instructional leadership opportunities for staff. The College has a strong ICT network and continues to expand its e-learning capabilities. Proud of its inclusive culture, Kurnai College has been recognised for its strong connections with the Indigenous community and its commitment to honouring and respecting the Gunai Kurnai people, reflected in its updated logo. The College works closely with the local community to support pathways into further education and training and comprises three mainstream campuses, including Year 7–10 campuses in Morwell and Churchill and a senior campus for Years 11–12 co-located with Federation University in Churchill, as well as two satellite campuses supporting students at risk and young parents. With a strong sense of identity and belonging across its five campuses, Kurnai College looks to the future with optimism and remains committed to providing the best possible learning opportunities for all members of its learning community.
