Walk us through a Day in the Life of a Graduate Consultant:

My day kicks off with an early rise, savouring a slow morning to set a positive tone. Whilst I work from home most days, I’m heading into the office early today for some uninterrupted focus time. Once my colleagues arrive, we rush to the café for the first of many coffee breaks for the day. Our mornings start with a daily stand-up meeting, ensuring we’re all aligned before tackling our challenges for the day. Each day brings something new – whether it’s client calls, experimenting with creative GenAI solutions, or tackling my next training course!

I find the afternoons tend to fly by as I get stuck into deep working sessions (interrupted by much needed coffee breaks of course). My recent project team are located on the east coast, so with the time difference, I find I get a little more uninterrupted focus time in the evening to wrap up my tasks before I head home.

You often aren’t aware of the knowledge or experience that someone holds under their belt, so embrace curiosity and open-mindedness when engaging with your colleagues or peers, and seize every opportunity as a chance to learn and grow.

What excites you most about being a graduate at Capgemini?

As a Graduate at Capgemini, you’re thrown into the deep end, but that’s where the excitement lies. If you thrive on challenges, Capgemini is the place for you. There is no “just a grad” mentality here; you’re an integral part of the team, and each person’s unique perspective brings value. Reflecting on my journey, the goals I’ve achieved and challenges I’ve overcome have been a reward like no other.

Can you share your career journey as a graduate?

From day one, the support from senior leaders was a pleasant surprise to me, it allowed me to focus on adding value, and the journey to the goal, rather than the pressure of meeting expectations. Capgemini’s Graduate Program provides extensive training, so whether you’ve had experience as a consultant or it’s your first time (like me), you are supported. Before joining Capgemini, I worked in a Human Resources role within the construction industry. Being one of Australia’s largest industries by employment, I never imagined I’d transition out of the construction industry, and into a tech company, but now I’ve worked with clients in the Public Sector, Energy industry and Natural Resources industry. Despite having no tech background, I’ve found my place here.

Can you walk us through a typical day in your life at Capgemini?

I currently work in the Cloud Infrastructure Services business line at Capgemini. My typical workday begins at 8:30 AM when I arrive at the office. On days when my meetings are less interactive, such as presentations, I especially enjoy working from the office. After a quick 10-minute setup, I start my day by checking and responding to emails and Teams updates, which usually takes about 10 minutes. I then focus on my most important tasks for the day. Some mornings, my team holds 10-30 minute stand-up meetings to discuss progress and align on priorities. Before my lunch break at 12:30 PM, I like to make myself a cup of coffee or tea and take a moment to enjoy the stunning views from our Level 10 office, which has floor-to-ceiling glass walls. This small ritual helps me recharge and refocus. I usually bring my own lunch, allowing me to connect with colleagues in a relaxed atmosphere at the dining area. Our conversations range from fitness and cooking tips to the latest developments in technology, including AI news. I value these catch-ups because they provide insights from a diverse group of people—from recent graduates to senior directors across various business lines. When I have technical questions, I often turn these casual discussions into quick mentoring sessions. I appreciate how patient and willing my colleagues are to share their knowledge, which reflects the collaborative and supportive culture at Capgemini. After lunch, I continue working on my tasks until 5:30 PM. In the afternoon, a coffee break paired with a piece of fruit or a biscuit from the office kitchen keeps me energised. After 5:30, I start wrapping up my work for the day. I usually walk home—a pleasant 20-minute route through a historic university campus and a nearby park. This walk is a highlight of my day, giving me time to listen to my favorite music, reflect on work, and feel grateful for the opportunity to pursue what I’m passionate about while continuously growing.

I am fascinated by the transformative power of cloud technology, and I’m passionate about contributing to its advancement. Can you share your journey to Capgemini and what led you to choose this company?

My journey to Capgemini was later in life and is a bit different from the typical young graduate path. I began my professional career by studying accounting and then running my own business in China. However, I’ve always had a deep interest in technology. Five years ago, when my visa allowed me to study and work in Australia, I decided to pursue my passion for IT. Despite encountering doubts and challenges, I remained committed to this new direction. Attending numerous cloud solution events further fueled my curiosity. I was captivated by how cloud technology transforms industries and improves daily lives. Since then, in 30 months, I have earned 19 cloud computing certifications, including several in AI, and my enthusiasm for learning continues to grow. Joining Capgemini was a dream come true for me, as I was drawn to the company’s commitment to innovation, professional development, and a supportive workplace culture. The graduate program has provided the perfect platform to apply my skills while learning from experienced professionals.

How does your work at Capgemini contribute to achieving the company’s mission of “Get The Future You Want”?

At Capgemini, the mission of “Get The Future You Want” resonates deeply with me. My work in cloud plays a critical role in helping clients streamline their operations, enhance efficiency, and adopt innovative technologies. For me, this mission means embracing continuous learning and seeking new challenges that drive both personal and professional growth. Every day, I have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology, collaborate with talented colleagues, and deliver solutions that make a difference. By fostering a growth mindset and remaining adaptable, I not only shape my own future but also help clients navigate their digital transformation journeys. I am proud to contribute to a workplace where innovation, collaboration, and a shared vision drive everyone forward.

Meet Ed, an Associate Consultant at Capgemini. Ed’s typical workday includes resource management, reporting, facilitating key meetings, and onboarding new starters onto projects. He is also actively involved in business development for the Public Sector team and serves as an ambassador for the Global Invent Transport community, promoting global collaboration on bids and ongoing projects. Read on to discover how Ed is rewriting his future!

Walk us through a typical workday at Capgemini. What are the key tasks and projects you focus on?

A typical workday varies depending on the day of the week and which office I’m working from. Currently, I’m in a Business Analyst (Project Management Office- PMO) role for a client, so I often work out of their office. I try to schedule most of my client meetings when I’m onsite, as I find it enhances collaboration.

My main tasks revolve around resource management and reporting within project management. My days can look quite different—some days I’m facilitating key meetings between the client, our team, and other stakeholders, recording actions and tracking updates, or inducting large groups of new starters onto the project.

At Capgemini, I also like to get involved in business development for the Public Sector team when capacity allows. One of the most exciting initiatives I’ve been part of is serving as an ambassador for our Global Invent Transport community. In this role, I facilitate calls with transport leads from different countries, encouraging collaboration on bids and ongoing projects.

Outside of work, I love getting involved in our monthly team socials—it’s always great to connect with colleagues in a more relaxed setting. As an Associate Consultant, no two days are ever the same, which keeps things exciting!

What advice would you give to someone considering a career at Capgemini as a graduate? What skills and experiences would be a good fit?

I firmly believe there’s a place for everyone in consulting. As someone who studied Law but didn’t necessarily see themselves following that career path, I found consulting to be a great fit. It’s perfect for people who enjoy problem-solving and want exposure to a variety of clients and industries.

Some of the experiences that helped me along the way included volunteering at university—whether through the student union, societies, or student consulting clubs—as well as part-time work in professional services. I’d strongly encourage students to get involved in university volunteering that aligns with their interests and career goals, and to gain relevant work experience where possible. Consulting clubs, in particular, can be a great way to get a feel for the industry and develop skills you can showcase during the recruitment process.

That said, the most important thing is how you approach challenges and problem-solving, especially in interviews. Since consulting isn’t something you study directly, a lot comes down to your ability to think on your feet, tackle challenges, and maintain a growth mindset—you’re always learning!

What excites you most about being a graduate at Capgemini? What challenges keep you engaged? What do you envision for the future?

One of the most exciting things about being an Associate Consultant at Capgemini is the sheer variety of work available, both in projects and internal initiatives. Given Capgemini’s size and global presence, you have the freedom to shape your own career—and you’re encouraged to do so!

On the project side, managing client relationships, juggling competing responsibilities, and leading meetings have all helped me step outside my comfort zone. Fortunately, I’ve had strong support from senior leaders throughout.

Looking ahead, I hope to become a subject matter expert within a particular capability or sub-sector of the public sector. I’m still working out exactly what that may be—watch this space!

Can you share your career journey as a graduate? What key experiences shaped your expertise and led you to Capgemini? What were you doing before?

I studied a double degree in Global Studies (International Relations) and Law (LLB). Throughout my studies, I took on both volunteer and paid roles to prepare for the job market. I held a variety of positions, including working as a Law Clerk at a commercial firm, serving as Treasurer for one of the largest student societies, volunteering as a student consultant for NGOs, and even being part of my university’s student union. Safe to say, I explored a lot of different opportunities!

I knew I didn’t want to follow the traditional path of a law graduate—I was looking for a career that was less rigid but still allowed me to use my critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with a variety of work. That’s what led me to apply for the Capgemini graduate program.

I also spent a year abroad in Sweden during my degree, which reinforced my desire to work in a global organisation. That experience played a big part in my decision to join Capgemini, where I could collaborate with teams around the world.

How does your work at Capgemini contribute to achieving the mission of ‘Get The Future You Want,’ both for yourself and our clients?

For me, ‘Get The Future You Want’ is all about taking ownership of your career and being open to opportunities. At Capgemini, I’ve been able to explore different areas of consulting, develop my PMO expertise, and get involved in global initiatives like the Transport community. The flexibility to shape my own path and work across various industries has been invaluable in helping me figure out where I want to go next.

For our clients, my work plays a role in ensuring smooth project delivery—whether that’s through facilitating collaboration, managing key project operations, or helping onboard new team members. Bringing people together, whether internally at Capgemini or externally with clients, is something I really enjoy, and it’s rewarding to see how effective teamwork can drive real results.

At the end of the day, consulting is all about problem-solving and adapting, and that’s what makes it such an exciting space to be in!
