Life & Culture

Our shared purpose

Our purpose is to benefit society through the transformative impact of education and research. We aspire to be a world-leading and globally connected Australian university with students at the heart of everything we do.

Building on a 170-year legacy, our Strategy 2030 focuses on empowering our people, partnering for impact, and leading with a future focus to address the most significant challenges of our time.

Be Yourself

The University of Melbourne is an Equal Opportunity Employer and a child-safe organisation. We are committed to creating an inclusive and equitable workplace where all individuals feel valued, respected, and have the opportunity to thrive regardless of gender identity, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, age, being a parent or having caring responsibilities.

We recognise that diverse backgrounds, perspectives and lived experiences strengthen our work and help us create meaningful impact.

Diversity and inclusion are central to our long‑term strategies and are supported by dedicated teams, action plans and partnerships across the University. This includes ongoing work in areas such as anti‑racism, gender equity, disability inclusion, LGBTIQA+ inclusion and building strong relationships with Indigenous communities.

We listen closely to the voices of staff and students with lived experience, ensuring our policies, systems and culture continue to evolve.
